AAUA Students Built a Solar Powered Incorporated DC Washing Machine

At Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), a group of physics students has successfully built a solar powered incorporated DC washing machine as their final year project. This is coming after some students from the same school, department and level successfully converted a Petrol Bike to Electrical Rechargeable motor Bike.

The idea came from a shared determination to address real-world problems using science and engineering. For many people in Nigeria, unstable electricity is a constant headache, making simple chores like doing laundry inconvenient. Inspired by the potential of renewable energy and the need for efficient, off-grid solutions, these AAUA students set out to create a device that could transform how people approach laundry in areas with limited power.

How Does the DC Washing Machine Work?

You might be wondering, what exactly is a DC washing machine, and how does it differ from the regular ones? Standard washing machines rely on alternating current (AC) from the grid, but a DC washing machine uses direct current, which can be supplied by batteries or solar panels.

This is exacly what these students woked on; a solar powered incorporated DC washing machine. This design makes the machine more flexible and energy-efficient, ideal for areas with unreliable electricity or for homes that run on solar energy.

The students focused on making their prototype simple yet effective. The washing machine features a DC motor, which is crucial for efficient energy consumption, and a control system to manage washing cycles. It operates smoothly using a minimal power supply, making it both economical and sustainable.

In an interview with the students, they confirmed that building the DC washing machine wasn’t a walk in the park. It involved thorough research, planning, and a lot of trial and error. The team had to consider factors like power efficiency, water usage, and the durability of components. They worked together to ensure every part of the design contributed to the overall goal of creating a functional and affordable washing solution.

The project was successfully executed by a two students including Dauda Abdulbaki Igbekelooluwa, Olusegun Ayomidotun Paul under the supervision of Dr. T.O Owolabi, whose guidance was instrumental.
